CINCINNATI, CHICAGO and DEERFIELD, Ill. - The Kroger Co. and Walgreens are expanding their pilot to introduce Kroger Express and Home Chef retail meal kits, according to a joint news release.

Kroger will open mini-food stores dubbed Kroger Express inside 13 Walgreens locations in Northern Kentucky in early 2019. The plan calls for offering 2,300 proprietary Our Brands products, plus national products, including meat, dairy, grocery and meal kits.  Each Kroger Express will be about 4,000 square feet and take up about a third of the Walgreen’s selling space.

The partnership was announced in October, and a trial grocery is currently operating in Florence, Kentucky.

In addition, the two companies have just introduced the Home Chef Express meal kits to 65 Walgreens locations in the Chicago area. During this pilot, Walgreens will offer three Home Chef Express meal kit options, with recipes rotating bi-weekly. Other recipes are available for delivery. Each meal kit serves two and cooks in about 15 minutes. Meal kits start at $17 each.
