Amazon Go Planned for London

Flagship U.K. store—and first cashierless Amazon Go store outside the U.S.—will launch in London.

LONDON, U.K. - Amazon Go is expanding internationally. The Sunday Telegraph reports that Amazon will open another checkout-free store near Oxford Circus in London. Amazon Go already has seven physical locations, but this will be the first Amazon Go store outside of the U.S.

The proposed location is in the West End, one of Europe’s most popular shopping locations. Amazon employees are reportedly looking at spaces that are between 3,000-5,000 square feet in size.

At Amazon Go stores, shoppers put items in a basket that automatically senses and charges them to a customer’s Amazon account. No lines and no interaction with a cashier. But the hardware to make this a reality is reported to cost $1 million—at least for the inaugural store in Seattle—so it’s a bit slow to open new locations.
