The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated an ongoing recall of tomatoes distributed throughout Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina to its “most severe warning,” saying there is a higher probability that potential salmonella contamination could lead to “serious adverse health consequences or death,” reported the New York Times this week. The tomatoes were distributed from April 23-28 under the name H&C Farms Label and were sold in packages as small as a three-pack and as large as 25 pounds, according to the NYT.

According to the FDA, it is unlikely that consumers will encounter any fresh tomatoes from the recalled batch, but the bacteria can survive for weeks in dry environments and months in wet ones, such as the freezer.

The recall was updated to Class I, which the FDA describes as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

According to the report, the potential source of contamination was not immediately known.

Last month, NACS Daily reported that the FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, said they were “investigating illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo infections linked to cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers Inc., in Boynton Beach, Florida, and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc., of Delray, Florida,” according to a statement.

The report said that Bedner Growers Inc. voluntarily recalled cucumbers sold at three Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market locations in Florida (Boynton Beach, Delray Beach and West Palm Beach) between April 29 and May 14.

As of May 31, the outbreak linked to cucumbers had sickened at least 45 people across 18 states, health officials said. They warned that the number of people infected was likely higher, per the New York Times.

Companies including Target have issued recalls for products with cucumbers that may be contaminated.
