Pepsi to Sell High-Caffeine Cola

Beverage leaders respond to changing customer demands.

Dec 16, 2019

PURCHASE, N.Y.—In April, Pepsi will roll out a new drink that combines the tastes of coffee and cola and provides almost double the amount of caffeine found in a regular Pepsi, according to Bloomberg.

Available only for a limited time, the new Pepsi Café will come in 12-ounce cans and in two flavors: original and vanilla. It is the most recent beverage for the company, which is responding to changing customer preferences. The company, which sells a wide selection of products, including Gatorade and Diet Pepsi, has faced sales pressure as consumers cut down on sugary soda and competitors enter the market with new options. Todd Kaplan, vice president of marketing at Pepsi, has said that consumers are looking for drink products that provide energy and an opportunity for indulgence.

According to Geeky-Gadgets.com, this is not the first time that cola and coffee have been combined. Pepsi introduced the short-lived Pepsi Kona in 1996 and another drink called the Pepsiccino in 2004.

Recently, Pepsi-rival Coca-Cola acquired Costa, the British cafe chain, for $5.1 billion. It offers Coca-Cola Plus Coffee in dozens of markets outside the U.S.
