SAN RAMON, Calif. – In early 2019, motorists filling up at a Chevron gas station will be able to pay for their fuel via PayPal, thanks to an agreement between the two companies, Digiday reports. Chevron USA said the partnership would allow customers to pay for car washes and gasoline with PayPal via the Chevron mobile app.

“It really is trying to change it from kind of a transaction out of necessity to an actual destination [to buy gas], and we’ve really been working closely with them to understand their customers and to build a loyalty program,” said Robert Clarkson, PayPal’s general manager for North America. Clarkson hinted that PayPal might work with Chevron on a loyalty program that would reward customers who pay for fuel via PayPal.

Chevron’s app will be offered on both Apple and Android platforms. Millennials’ habits and expectations are driving retailers to add more mobile payment and rewards options. To meet that need, convenience stores such as Cumberland Farms and 7-Eleven are embracing apps, both as payment options and as rewards programs.
