Customers Put C-Store Fried Chicken on Their Big Game Menu

More consumers are turning to convenience stores for fresh foodservice ahead of Super Bowl LII.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – This weekend, restaurants with takeout options are gearing up for a huge weekend as the New England Patriots battle the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII. But another retail channel is also anticipating a blockbuster weekend: convenience stores, the Winston-Salem Journal reports. Consumers are expected to spend $15.3 billion on the game this year.

With more convenience stores churning out fresh, quality foodservice, customers are stopping by not only for a quick beverage or snack, but to purchase fried chicken, pizza, subs and wings for parties. In Winston-Salem, one convenience store have become so well-known for their fried chicken, that customers have been flocking to place orders ahead of Sunday’s big game.

George Barghout, co-owner of J and J Kitchen and Food Mart, said his store will sell around seven days’ worth of fried chicken on Sunday. Orders have been pouring in for his made-from-scratch leg quarters, breasts, wings, nuggets, chicken liver and gizzards, along with fried shrimp. Barghout said he typically sells around 800 pounds of chicken wings each week, but will probably cook that much on Sunday.

The popularity of his cooking has Barghout thinking of ways to expand the small kitchen and perhaps add a grill top. But for now, he’s content to dream up new menu items, such as chicken and waffles. himself in the kitchen, cooking the chicken. “If it was up to me, I might just get rid of the rest of the store,” he said. “People really like the chicken.”
