Ahead of Earth Day this week, Sheetz announced it has reduced energy consumption by 20% across its more than 830 locations, according to a press release sent to NACS.

In 2019, Sheetz joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Buildings Challenge, a voluntary initiative in which participating organizations commit to reducing energy consumption by 20% over 10 years.

“Sheetz remains the only convenience store chain participating in the challenge, which includes nearly 300 organizations across nine key market sectors and 24 Fortune 100 companies,” the retailer said.

Sheetz said it is working to reduce the environmental impact of its locations through the following measures:

  • Sustainable Store Designs: Since 2011, all new Sheetz stores have been built with LED lighting and low-flow water fixtures. Older stores have been upgraded with LED lighting, variable frequency drives (VFDs) and high-efficiency HVAC systems to reduce energy consumption.
  • Building Optimization & Controls: Systemwide retro-commissioning and enhanced building management systems improve efficiency across HVAC, refrigeration and lighting. Sheetz earned the Innovation Award from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory for HVAC control excellence in 2024.
  • Energy Data & Monitoring: Equipment submetering enables detailed energy tracking, supporting targeted efficiency improvements and operational optimization.
  • Recycling & Waste Diversion: All corporate locations and more than 95% of retail locations recycle corrugated cardboard, with expanded recycling for plastics, metals, glass and paper across 381 stores where services are available.

Sheetz will be officially recognized for this achievement during this year’s Better Buildings & Better Plants Summit May 11–13.

In other recent Sheetz news, earlier this month the retailer was named to this year’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For by Fortune Media and Great Place to Work for the 11th consecutive year.

The company ranked 32nd on the list—its highest placement ever. The ranking recognizes companies that build a “high-trust workplace environment,” measured through employee surveys, confidential feedback from more than one million U.S. workers and HR data from participating companies.
