NEW YORK—Half of consumers will use contactless or curbside pickup during this year’s holiday season, compared to last year, according to a new survey from BlackFriday.com and Survey Gizmo, Retail Dive reports. More consumers (30%) will shop on Cyber Monday rather than Black Friday (24%) for top items like clothing (50%) and home goods and smart devices (39%).

Overall, this year’s holiday season is shaping up to be the same as last year, with 60% of customers saying they will “spend about the same,” the survey found. The current economic climate has retailers nervous about this year’s holiday shopping season.

The survey discovered that 44% of consumers will shop mostly in stores, but retailers are hedging their bets with more online products. A recent PayPal poll showed 39% of retailers surveyed said they would have digital marketplaces and 31% will sell products via social media.

Many retailers, such as At Home, BJ’s Wholesale, Jos. A. Banks and Men’s Warehouse, have buy online/pickup in store options (BOPIS) already in place in anticipation of a robust holiday season. BlackFriday.com’s survey noted that the pandemic has pushed BOPIS at retail, with more stores promoting curbside pickup as a contactless alternative to in-store shopping.
