SAN FRANCISCO—Move, a digital supermarket, has officially opened its online doors to the public—or at least to consumers who have a Move membership. According to Yahoo, consumers can buy a membership to Move, locking in the lowest annual membership fee for life, and then purchase premium products without middleman prices.
Move works directly with artisans to make daily staples and then ship them directly to the consumer. The business recently launched on Kickstarter.com, a Brooklyn-based global crowdfunding platform focused on creativity and merchandising. Backers can lock in the annual $95 per year membership rate and will reportedly be able to place orders starting in February 2020, months ahead of the general public.
The supermarket experience has not changed much in over three decades, and 97% of grocery shopping is still done offline. For almost three years, Move has been building an online, national supermarket and plans to launch with 100 staple items. The company says it will focus on quality over size of selection and is working with producers who have been recognized with Michelin stars, James Beard and other awards.
“We believe that if you want to be a truly great retailer, you have to make your own products—which is exactly what we're doing. We control every part of the product journey from design to delivery,” said Chai Mishra, CEO and founder of Move. “That allows us to make products that are tangibly higher quality, more affordable and more ethical.”
