NORFOLK, Va.—In the ongoing battle of the chicken sandwich, KFC is trying to neutralize its enemies with the introduction of its latest weapon: the chicken and donut sandwich, reports U.S. News.
Amid a social media-fueled rivalry with Popeye's, Chick-fil-A and Wendy's, KFC has introduced its rival sandwich at 40 locations in Virginia and Pennsylvania. It is exactly what it sounds like: a whole doughnut on the bottom, a whole doughnut on the top and an extra-crispy fried chicken breast in the middle.
A reviewer described the donuts as tasting like a Krispy Kreme but “a little denser … On most bites of the sandwich, it tastes a lot like doughnut. It tastes like doughnut with an inch-thick accent of celery-salted chicken.”
Despite the public’s tendency to dismiss the competition as a series of marketing stunts, the chicken war is being taken seriously by at least one consumer. Last month, Popeye’s didn’t have enough chicken sandwiches on hand to meet demand, and a Tennessee man, Craig Barr, filed a lawsuit against the chain alleging "false advertising" and “deceptive business practices.” He seeks $5,000 in damages. In addition to his car suffering rim and tire damage as he drove from location to location seeking the illusive sandwich, he claims he was humiliated when his friends laughed at him.
