SYDNEY—Woolworths, an Australia-based supermarket chain, opened its first cashless store in Sydney with one prime goal: to make shopping “as seamless as possible” for inner-city workers. At 538 square feet and sitting in retail space that was formerly a coffee shop, the new cashless store is called MetroGo, Retail in Asia says.

Woolworths designed the shop for busy professionals who want a convenient service with healthy food options. A typical Woolworth store features 20,000 products; however the new MetroGo will only feature a fraction of that along with grab-and-go breakfast, lunch, snack and drink options.

“MetroGo will offer a small range with a focus on healthier breakfast, lunch and snacking options, and customers can pay with our Scan&Go mobile app, Eftpos or credit card payments,” said Justin Nolan, general manager of Woolsworths Metro.

Shoppers can expect to be in the store for three minutes and can even pre-order their food and coffee using the Skip app, making their experience quick, convenient and easily accessible.
