Stand-Up Pouches Are Standing Out
One trendy innovation in food packaging is the squeezable, stand-up pouch.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.—Condiments are getting a stand-up look in packaging, reports the Washington Post. Daisy brand sour cream, Chobani yogurt and Original Uncle Dougie’s organic barbecue sauces are among the consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies adopting Standcap Inverted Pouches.
CPGs are switching from bulky plastic bottles to flexible containers to cut down on transportation and storage costs, as well as to increase durability and sustainability.
At least four companies, Glenroy, Aptar, Volpak and Viking Masek, create the Standcap Inverted Pouch, a flexible tube with a flip top. The new-fangled packages are catching on quickly. The Standcap pouch uses 81% less water and produces 78% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than glass bottles, according to Glenroy.
Food Dive reported that a study conducted by L.E.K. Consulting earlier this year found that of 250 CPG brands surveyed, 75% expect to increase packaging spending during the next year, and 90% say that packaging is important to their success. The study also found that more than half of respondents are focusing on packaging that is easier to open.
It’s also a bit of a generational thing. The Washington Post says that “younger generations don’t want to dirty silverware if they don’t have to.” And as children, millennials drank fruit juice and chocolate milk from pouches. These new standing, squeezable packages are prime for this demographic who are now responsible for household shopping.
