ALEXANDRIA, Va.— An estimated 44 million U.S. smartphone users will use third-party food delivery apps by 2020—a projected increase of 6 million compared with 2019, according to eMarketer research reported by Restaurant Dive.
There is high demand for grocery and food delivery services. By 2021, nearly 50 million U.S. consumers will use a food delivery app, and by 2023 the number of users will grow to 60 million people, making up 23% of smartphone users, according to the report.
Retailers are trying to figure out the best approach. Some are building their own meal delivery platforms, while others are rolling out specific apps that connect to a third party like Instacart.
Grocery Dive said that “while grocery platforms like Instacart and Shipt are already in place for many retailers and have proven reliable, a third-party company like DoorDash or Grubhub that has a strong following could help grocers better compete with restaurants.”
As of February, DoorDash (27.6%), Grubhub (26.7%) and Uber Eats (25.2%) claimed the most market share in the food-delivery space.
The report found that 83% of consumers are willing to pay as much as $5 in delivery fees. U.S. restaurants, meanwhile, are pushing back against fees charged by third-party delivery companies, as reported in NACS Daily.
