WASHINGTON – The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a notice that certain North Carolina businesses may be eligible for tax relief due to Hurricane Florence.
The agency has extended certain filing deadlines that began on September 7 (such as quarterly payroll, excise tax and estimated income tax filings) to January 31, 2019. Currently businesses in Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Duplin, Harnett, Lenoir, Jones, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Robeson, Sampson and Wayne counties are eligible for the relief.
Additionally, on September 18, the IRS waived penalties for the sale and highway use of dyed diesel fuel. However, “the relief is available only if the operator or the person selling the fuel pays the tax of 24.4 cents per gallon that is normally applied to diesel fuel for highway use.” Environmental regulations also must be met.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved a waiver that will allow participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in North Carolina to buy hot foods with their benefits through October 31.
