Ahead of the busy holiday shopping season, retailers are beginning hiring efforts for seasonal positions. Target will add about 100,000 positions, Reuters reported, while Aldi is hiring 13,000 workers and increasing its minimum wage to $18 per hour for store jobs and $23 per hour for warehouse jobs.
Target’s 100,000 planned positions across its stores and supply chain facilities is in line with what the retailer has hired over the past three years, Reuters said, and increases Target’s workforce by about 25%.
According to Fox 5, Aldi already employs over 49,000 workers and said that those who work more than 30 hours a week will also receive benefits like health care insurance and paid time off. The increased wages will be based on market and position, the company said.
According to data from Deloitte, retail sales are expected to grow at their slowest pace in six years “as persistent inflationary pressures have exhausted consumer savings and turned shoppers more frugal,” wrote Reuters.
Amid cost concerns, Aldi, which is known for being a lower cost budget grocery chain, plans to expand by adding 800 stores nationwide by the end of 2028 through a combination of new openings and store conversions.
In 2023, Amazon led the seasonal hiring blitz with 250,000 hires.
