The Transportation Energy Institute (TEI) has developed the Charging Analytics Program (CAP), designed to help fuel retailers make decisions around installing and operating EV chargers.
CAP focuses on utilizing existing and regularly updated charger data to give insights into what is happening under different site situations and business types. Additionally, the charging data is used to benchmark sites and similar locations.
“CAP helps businesses take the guesswork out of the decision-making process,” said John Eichberger, executive director at the Transportation Energy Institute. “For retailers who are thinking about installing chargers for the first time, CAP helps them make informed decisions about which markets might be ready to support additional charger installations, what type of customer traffic they might expect based upon performance at similar sites in similar markets, how long customers typically stay at similarly positioned chargers and a variety of other insights into how the chargers might be used—all of which enhance the potential profitability of their installation. And retailers who already have chargers installed can utilize the program to compare their performance against similar sites to help maximize their profitability.”
In developing the program, TEI and its members found that numerous site selection and forecasting tools for EV charging are not provided by independent non-profit research entities and are instead offered by ones that have a financial interest in outcomes.
CAP evaluates markets at the national, state/provincial, and local levels to determine when they might be ready to support additional charging stations based on data from a wide variety of sources to help retailers evaluate potential demand for chargers in their markets. There are several levels of program subscriptions available.
Aside from where and when to install EV chargers, TEI provides numerous resources to help educate and guide retailers through the installation process with the Match-Making list, a compilation of organizations supporting a variety of ways to address the installation of electric vehicle service equipment at convenience stores.
