Will Oreos Come With CBD?

DEERFIELD, Ill. – Mondelez International said it would be looking into the cannabis food market, CNBC reports. “Yes, we’re getting ready, but we obviously want to stay within what is legal and play it the right way,” CEO Dirk Van de Put said.
Van de Put nixed the idea of adding the non-psychoactive compound in cannabis to its family brands, like Oreos and Chips Ahoy cookies, but CBD could be put into other products or even a brand new product line.
Already, a number of new companies have entered the CBD-infused beverage and food market, while larger companies have been waiting for the federal government to regulate the industry. Van de Put estimated CBD will become mainstream in the “not-so-far future.”
The 2018 farm bill legalized many CBD products, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration forbids putting the compound into drinks or beverages. The agency will hold its first public hearing in June to start the process. “The space is not clear,” Van de Put said. “It’s a bit clearer in non-food products. In food products, I’m hoping that the FDA will bring some clarity in the coming months.”
