DES MOINES—Amid a tight labor market, Kum & Go has moved 2,000 workers from part-time to full-time with benefits, the Des Moines Register reports. The company has been systematically making workers eligible for health insurance, paid time off, tuition reimbursement, parental leave and a 401K.
The change is part of the company’s plan to bring in new workers and retain current employees. “If you work 40 hours a week and have consistent schedules, you’re more likely to be engaged with Kum & Go,” said Tanner Krause, president of Kum & Go.
With a low unemployment rate, businesses are getting creative to both hire and keep qualified employees. Kum & Go isn’t the only company moving part-timers to full-timers, even when it costs more to pay benefits.
“This year, we’ve seen an increase in the number of companies transferring workers to permanent contracts,” in foodservices, financial and construction, said Becky Frankiewicz, president of staffing company ManpowerGroup North America.
Last month, a new study found that hourly employees were more interested in earning promotions than switching jobs. The Branch Report discovered that nearly 70% of hourly workers were more optimistic about their job prospects than the state of the economy (50.1%).
