MILFORD, Conn.–Subway plans to remodel more than 10,500 Subway restaurants by the end of 2020, the restaurant chain said in a press release. A multimillion-dollar grant program will cover 25% of the redesign costs, which include a new design and décor.

Franchise owners are also investing to remodel even more restaurants during the next year. These remodeled locations will join the nearly 1,400 global remodels already completed and the nearly 900 global remodels currently underway.

In an effort to improve its guest experience, Subway is embarking on a multiyear global transformation centered on three main initiatives: updated, modern restaurant redesigns; bold new flavors, tastes and menu options; and greater convenience and enhanced customer service for guests.

“Franchising works best when franchise brands and franchise business owners succeed together,” said Stephen Worley, senior director of communications for the International Franchise Association (IFA). “IFA commends Subway for their efforts to facilitate these renovations, which can benefit franchise owners, their employees, and their customers alike.”

In addition to a refresh on the look and feel, Subway announced an $80 million investment last year to improve flavors and create a more personalized experience. This includes Flavor Stations and Beverage Stations. The program is already in 14 countries and will be eligible in U.S. restaurants this summer.
