DENVER – Ceria’s Grainwave combines Belgian-style ale and 5 milligrams of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, KUNC-FM reports. The beer is available in more than 50 marijuana dispensaries across Colorado, becoming the first mass-produced, THC-infused beer.
It’s been five years since Colorado okayed recreational cannabis, and sales of marijuana and cannabis-infused products reached close to $1.6 billion last year. As federal and state laws change in relation to marijuana, new infused products are likely to blossom.
“You could pretty much simulate the beer world,” said Keith Villa with Ceria. “Everything from a light beer like a Coors Light, Bud Light, Miller Light all the way up to a super heavy imperial stout or a barrel-aged product. Really, the sky's the limit.”
BDS Analytics predicts cannabis-infused drinks to hit $1 billion, with 10 states and Washington, D.C., allowing recreational pot sales. Canada legalized marijuana last year. “If you have a beverage that is infused with cannabis and it has an appropriate level of THC or whatever the other cannabinoids might be, you don't have to think too hard about how to consume that and what that looks like to other people,” said Jessica Lukas, vice president of consumer insights for BDS.
