Franchisees Go Portable with Sustainable Mobile Carts

MOVE Systems is partnering with brands like Dunkin’ and Nathan’s Famous—and promoting a more sustainable approach than food trucks.

New York City – Move over food trucks, a new player is making food go mobile. MOVE Systems, maker of solar-powered and battery-rechargeable food carts, has more than 65 mobile restaurants in New York City—and isn’t stopping there.

Most recently, Dunkin’ and Nathan’s Famous have partnered with the company to expand their reach and make it easier to kick off a new franchise. In 2019, MOVE will target franchise businesses to provide a more cost-effective way to lease a new shop. In fact, leasing a MOVE cart is just $1 a month.

MOVE System’s platform, the MVR101, is a portable cart that uses solar energy and rechargeable battery-power that enables the cart to move freely or plug into an existing power grid. In one cart, you can use a mobile, point-of-sale system and cloud-enabled remote fleet management.

It makes a case on the sustainability front: MOVE carts produce 60% less greenhouse gas and 95% less smog-causing pollution than traditional food carts and trucks.

According to Restaurant Dive, these mobile units allow restaurant chains to test new markets more easily. But the problem lies in space. A MOVE cart may not have as much infrastructure for some chains. Many are looking into the mobile space though: Auntie Anne’s deployed two dozen food trucks in nine cities and Shake Shack is planning to roll out food trucks soon.
