D-SNAP Benefits Available to Nebraska Flood Victims

Households who may not be eligible for regular SNAP may qualify for disaster food assistance.

Apr 01, 2019

WASHINGTON D.C. – Recent flooding in Nebraska has prompted the United States Department of Agriculture, which oversees the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, to approve a Disaster SNAP program.

According a USDA press release, low-income Nebraskans who are recovering from the flood’s aftermath and who are SNAP eligible will receive one month of benefits, equivalent to the maximum amount of benefits normally issued to a SNAP household of their size, to meet their food needs.

To be eligible for D-SNAP, a household must live in an identified disaster area, have been affected by the disaster and meet certain D-SNAP eligibility criteria. In this case, however, households who may not normally be eligible under regular SNAP rules may qualify for D-SNAP, if they meet the disaster income limits and have qualifying disaster-related expenses.

Nebraska will share information about D-SNAP operating dates and locations through the local media.

In addition, USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service approved Nebraska’s request to issue mass replacements to existing SNAP households in the counties of Butler, Cass, Colfax, Dodge, Sarpy and Washington, and specific ZIP codes in Nemaha County, Saunders County and Douglas County. This waiver approval will allow households in these affected counties to receive replacement of 75% of the March SNAP benefit.
