PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Wawa, the Pennsylvania-based convenience store with more than 800 locations, has opened it largest store ever—11,500 square feet—near the Liberty Bell and Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia, according to Grocerydive.com.
The new Wawa sits in an art deco space with high vaulted ceilings, a living plant wall, large digital screens and free WiFi. Entering the store, guests are greeted by a lounge furnished with couches and cafe seating that encourages them to stay a while.
In addition to standard items, such as Wawa’s signature hoagie, the downtown location sells salads, espresso, cold brew and kombucha on tap, pastries and bread baked in-house. Visitors can take home a piece of Wawa in the form of branded t-shirts, water bottles and coffee mugs.
The upscale convenience store has quickly become central to Wawa’s business model for the future. The privately owned chain opened a similar version in downtown D.C. last year, complete with indoor and outdoor seating, free bike pumps, selfie screens and nitro cold-brew coffee.
