Wawa Inc. announced the official start of hiring efforts at its beach and shore locations. The retailer aims to hire nearly 1,500 new associates at Wawa stores from the New Jersey Shore to the beaches of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Wawa has more than 60 stores located in those areas that are preparing for the summer season.

“It’s never too early to start planning for summer, and that includes lining up seasonal work while spending time at the beach or shore,” said Maria Kalogredis, chief people officer, Wawa. “We have many associates that start with us during the summer and enjoy their experience so much that they stay with us and go on to soar to new heights in their careers.”

According to the release, Wawa’s 24/7 operations offer flexible schedules that match employees' availability. Included in every shift is a free Wawa Shorti sub sandwich and associates have access to a food menu with deeply discounted food items available for purchase. The company also said that after meeting eligibility requirements, all full-time and part-time associates receive a package of financial and personal benefits that include health and wellness benefits, tuition reimbursement and a 401(k) with matching.

Earlier this week, Wawa launched its “Buy a Kids’ Meal, Make an Impact,” initiative. For every Wawa kids’ meal purchased until July 28, Wawa will donate funds to local food bank partners to provide meals to the community.

The initiative is an extension of the retailer's Fly Beyond program, which aims to expand access to fresh and nutritious foods to underserved communities through local Feeding America Food Bank partners.

“One in five children is at risk of going to bed hungry, and even more lack access to fresh, nutritious produce” said Greg Higgerson, chief development officer, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, a partner food bank of Wawa and The Wawa Foundation. “Fly Beyond program support from Wawa and The Wawa Foundation help us ensure kids not only have more access to food and snacks, they help us add fresh, healthy ingredients to build healthy habits.

Together, Wawa and its customers will be able to fund approximately 45,000 meals per week. The proceeds from every store will support the local Feeding America Food Banks within the store’s operating area.
