Senator Schumer Goes After E-Cigarette Marketing

The Protecting Children from Electronic Cigarette Advertising Act would ban the marketing of e-cigarettes to children.

NEW YORK – U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) says he will continue to fight for passage of legislation that bans the marketing of electronic cigarettes to children, the New York Daily News reports.

Schumer alleges that some tobacco companies are specifically targeting children by marketing flavors like gummy bears and cotton candy, which are “hooking” a new crop of smokers.

“They are making a campaign to go after kids and that must stop,” Schumer said. He promised to push the Protecting Children from Electronic Cigarette Advertising Act through the Senate, legislation that would tighten advertising laws regarding tobacco products.

Schumer said that adolescents who smoke e-cigarettes are seven times more likely to smoke tobacco cigarettes later in life, according to a study published last week in JAMA Pediatrics.
