ALEXANDRIA, Va. – With billions of dollars at stake, the battle over both debit and credit card swipe fees is heating up. A 2016 ruling threw out the proposed $7 billion-plus credit card “settlement” and the banking industry is seeking to overturn elements of debit card reform that have saved consumers an estimated $6 billion a year. Along the way, the rhetoric has heated up, with some dubious “research studies” floated.

The latest NACS Convenience Matters podcast separates fact from fiction and tell retailers what they need to know—and do—as the issue continues to heat up.

In “Swipe Fees: What You Need to Know,” cohosts Jeff Lenard and Carolyn Schnare of NACS talk to NACS legal counsel Douglas Kantor, partner at Steptoe & Johnson, about whether current regulations and legislation related to swipe fees may change, and how NACS is supporting them.

“There are a number of new developments to consider on both the debit and credit card fronts, and Doug’s insights are invaluable as we seek to educate a new Congress on our industry’s position on financial issues,” Lenard said.

A new Convenience Matters podcast is released every week, focusing on topics related to convenience stores. Since launching in February 2016, it has been downloaded in more than 60 countries.
