Amazon to Offer Free Grocery Pickup

New perk for Prime members follows trends set by other customer-focused groceries.
August 9, 2018

SEATTLE – Prime members are on a roll. In addition to various benefits Amazon has offered them recently, the company has launched a new grocery pickup service at Whole Foods Markets that lets Prime members order groceries and pick up that order within an hour, according to Foodbev.com.

Pickup benefits initially will be available from Whole Foods locations in Sacramento, California, and Virginia Beach, Virginia, though the company said that the service will be introduced to other cities throughout 2018.

To participate, Prime members simply order food through the Prime Now app and select the pickup option when processing the order. Then they drive to their Whole Foods store and park in a designated spot. A Prime Now store assistant will be on hand to load groceries into their car.

Consumers who spend more than $35 can pick up their groceries for free in an hour or can pay $4.99 to pick up their order in 30 minutes. The service will be available daily from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm, and subscribers also can use the service and order through Alexa devices.

“Pickup from Whole Foods Market is a perfect option for customers who want to grab healthy and organic groceries at their convenience, all without leaving their car,” said Stephenie Landry, worldwide vice president of Prime Now, AmazonFresh and Amazon Restaurants.

“A customer can order at 5:00 pm, pick up at 5:30 pm, and we’ll have their groceries loaded into their car just minutes after arrival,” she said. “For an even faster experience, customers can tell us they are on their way using the Prime Now app, and groceries will be ready as they arrive.”

Amazon acquired the Whole Foods chain for $13.7 billion in 2017. This latest Prime benefit rolls out as Amazon seeks to continue its expansion in the retail sector.
