Digital coupon company Ibotta gives tips on when to shop.

DENVER – Ibotta, the mobile app company that offers hundreds of cash-back deals, conducted research on the best times for consumers to hit the grocery store. For many Americans, the weekend is the only time to shop, but some may decide to follow advice from Ibotta and others, and switch up the routine to save some money.

The research shows that weekends are the most expensive time to shop for food, regardless of U.S. region. Ibotta offered recommendations for consumers to reap savings by shopping on weekdays, including:

  • Stock up on wine on Tuesdays (it averages about 4% cheaper)
  • Buy bread on Wednesdays (2% cheaper) and beer (about 1% cheaper)
  • Get sweet treats and savory snacks on Thursdays to get a little less than 1% off
  • Purchase produce and ice cream on Fridays (about 1% cheaper)

Retail trends blogger Supermarket Guru Phil Lempert suggests shopping on Wednesdays and Thursdays when a lot of products go on sale. He also recommends that consumers consider shopping early or late to avoid crowds, and buy in bulk to save even more.

For consumers who can’t make it to the store on the best shopping days, many grocery stores and chains are implementing digital shelf tags from IBM that reflect immediate discounts. It’s a handy tool for retailers and stores too: If items are about to hit the sell-by date, the digital shelf tag can be changed in real time to reflect a lower price before day’s end.
