BOSTON – GasBuddy revealed the states with the most aggressive drivers, basing their rating on the number of minutes between aggressive driving events such as speeding, rapid acceleration and braking. The top three states with the most aggressive drivers are California at 6.6 minutes, Connecticut at 8.2 minutes and Georgia at 8.2 minutes.

According to GasBuddy, aggressive driving habits can waste gas and lower gas mileage by as much as 40%. This can cost a drive an extra $477 in fuel consumption every year—causing more trips to the gas pump.

When broken down by geographic region, Connecticut has the most aggressive drivers in the Northeast, while Georgia takes the South, Illinois takes the Midwest and California takes the West.

“Our findings indicate that states with densely populated cities and high levels of congestion are where motorists are more inclined to drive aggressively,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “And with gas prices expected to continue to rise well into the summer months, simply being aware of how you drive can dramatically lower fuel costs, prevent damages to your vehicle, and make the roads safer for everyone.”

Additional findings look at gas-guzzling driving habits. Hard braking tops the list as the most frequent aggressive driving event, making up 67% of total events. Speeding and acceleration follow, at 25% and 8% respectively.

The findings come from tens of millions of trips compiled in GasBuddy’s Trips feature, which provides drivers with an assessment of their driving habits in real time to improve fuel efficiency.
