PHILADELPHIA – Coca-Cola is leveraging its Honest Tea brand to expand distribution this summer for its Honest Sport drink, a Coca-Cola spokesman confirmed to The Street.

Honest Sport, a certified organic sports drink made with cane sugar, debuted last June in a pilot test at several mid-Atlantic Whole Foods stores. Now, the beverage is available in 400-plus stores within the natural foods channel, including Whole Foods, The Fresh Market, Fresh Thyme and Earth Fare, notes the news source.

Citing Beverage Digest data, The Street writes that the U.S. sports drink category saw volume increase 4% in 2016, with both Gatorade and Powerade experiencing their volume increase nearly 3.5%. Gatorade is the market leader in the sports drink space, with more than 71% of market share in the United States.

Coca-Cola announced in March a revamped recipe and packaging for Honest Sport. Three 100-calorie varieties, Lemon, Orange and Berry, are available in 16.9 fl. oz. bottles. The brand is a natural expansion for Honest Tea, which produces organic bottled iced tea as well as other organic beverages, such as Honest Kids and Honest Fizz.
