Coke Refreshes Fresca

The soft drink maker wants to rejuvenate the 50-year-old brand.

ATLANTA – Fresca is making a comeback with a new design and new flavors, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports. The Coca-Cola company announced that it will be refreshing Fresca “even though it never left the marketplace.”

The no-calorie soda will add three flavors—Black Cherry Citrus, Original Citrus and Peach Citrus—as well as a revamped can. With the changes, Coke hopes to reel “in a new generation of drinkers unfamiliar with the brand.”

Meaning “fresh” in Spanish, Fresca launched in 1967, the same year as TaB, another no-calorie soda. With its lime-grapefruit flavor, Fresca became popular in the 90s and early 2000s, but many millennials haven’t tried it yet.

“Fresca hasn’t said anything to consumers since 2008, and our awareness with younger consumers is very low,” said Ryan Hughes, associate brand manager of Sprite and Citrus Brands. “We felt it was time for a refresh after about a decade of silence.”

The reintroduction of Fresca follows Coke’s “brand rejuvenation” of Diet Coke with four new flavors, and other drink launches. “Fresca is a magical brand that, when once people taste and experience, fall in love with,” he said. “It hits the sweet spot somewhere between a soda and a flavored sparkling water.”

Coke will use POS ads and sampling to spark millennial interest in Fresca, as well as explore liquor brand partnerships, since the beverage is often used in cocktails.
