BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana lawmakers are considering banning the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to anyone younger than 16, the Associated Press reports.

A Louisiana mother, who is blaming energy drinks for her 15-year old son??s recent illness, prompted the move by state Sen. Robert Adley to propose the prohibition.

The AP writes that the legislation could be considered in the legislative session that begins next week. It would prohibit the sale of energy drinks to anyone under the age of 16, characterizing it as an "unfair trade practice." Violators would face a fine or civil penalty.

The ban would affect any drink ?" except coffee ?" that contains at least five milligrams of caffeine per ounce.

Energy drink manufacturers maintain that their drinks are safe for consumption.
