The Couponing Craze Continues

More couponers are technically savvy, well-to-do and educated.

NEW YORK - Last year registered a 63% bump in coupon redemption, according to Coupons.org, CNBC reports. But just who??s redeeming the coupons might surprise you. Households with incomes of $100,000 or higher are 50% more likely to use coupons than those households with incomes under $35,000. College graduates are twice as likely to clip coupons than those without a high school diploma.

However, a higher redemption rate of coupons does not mean that marketers are distributing more coupons. Consumer packaged goods lowered coupon distribution by 7.5% in 2011, according to Inmar.

"Shoppers continue to love coupons," said Bob Carter, president of Inmar Promotion Services. "With consumer confidence flat, unemployment rates still a challenge and prices for most consumables on the rise, it??s now cool to be frugal ?" to shop smartly. And, coupons are the vehicle consumers are using to do just that."

Technology has advanced enough to drive coupon growth, with online and mobile coupons growing. During the last few years, online coupon use has jumped by 360%, and one in five smartphone users clicked on mobile coupons last year.

"Smartphone coupons are becoming more and more prevalent," said Crystal Paine, who writes the MoneySavingMom.com blog. "I still feel like they have a lot of kinks to be worked out. A lot of the time, there are so many steps. A lot of people are hesitant because of all the steps involved ?" they would rather just clip a coupon or sign up for an e-mail newsletter."
