NEW YORK - Starbucks is now selling the Square mobile card reader at its 7,000 U.S. stores, reports The New York Times.

The coffeehouse chain is selling the device for $10, notes the newspaper, and consumers who are new to Square can sign up and receive a $10 rebate, effectively making the reader free.

Linda Mills, a Starbucks spokeswoman, told the newspaper that selling Square is another step in showing the company??s commitment to Square. Starbucks invested $25 million in the start-up, and Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, joined Square??s board of directors.

DVICE.com writes that the strategy of having the mobile card readers available in Starbucks stores "makes a lot of sense when you consider how many entrepreneurs and remote-working freelancers use Starbucks' seating and free Wi-Fi to serve as a kind of unofficial co-working space."
