The free service to its members allows retailers to deliver personalized ads to users.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. – Dispensing customized ads, promos and discounts to customers has just gotten a little easier with GasBuddy’s new Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons. The company will send the technology free of charge to any of its gasoline stations customers, RFID Journal reports.

The beacon pushes promotional information to customers via the GasBuddy app, which currently lists gasoline prices at 150,000 U.S. convenience stores. Around 1,100 stations have taken advantage of the beacons so far. GasBuddy’s goal is to have 5,000 locations with the beacon by the end of 2015.

Greg Fox, vice president of business development, said that the beacon coupled with the app will help gasoline stations leverage merchandise sales. Convenience stores utilize physical ads such as counter displays, pump toppers and window clings. “That's very stale, and very old-school,” he said.

The GasBuddy app already sent coupons from select brands to customers, but the beacon technology allows for more targeted selling. The geolocation technology supplies location data for the user, which in turn makes it easier for the retailer to send specific ads or discounts via the app.
