Chocolate Rules the Roost

At Halloween, 72% of all candy purchased is chocolate.

CHICAGO – Chocolate is quite the treat this time of year. A recent survey from the National Confectioners Association found that 72% of all candy expenditures is for chocolate, USA Today reports. Sales of the sweet, cocoa candy has been rising. In 2012, Americans shelled out more than $12.6 billion on chocolate, a 3.8% uptick from 2011.

All of that candy is concentrated in just a handful of companies. Hershey or Mars own the top 10 best-selling chocolate brands. Many of the most popular chocolate candies have been around for a long time. Hershey’s brand chocolate debuted in 1900, for example.

According to IRI, during the previous 52 months ending Sept. 8, Americans bought 3.5 billion chocolate boxes, bars and bags under 3.5 ounces for $3.9 billion. Based on IRI data, here are the top 10 best-selling chocolate brands in packages less than 3.5 ounces during the past year. Sales numbers were gathered from convenience stores, grocery stores, drugstores, mass market retailers, military commissaries and some club and dollar stores.
