LONDON – At one of its London locations, Sainbury’s is testing technology that allows shoppers to scan-and-pay without checking out with a cashier, Chain Store Age reports. The U.K. grocery chain is piloting the program with an updated version of the chain’s SmartShop app that allows customers to scan barcodes while shopping, then pay with ApplePay.

The SmartShop app can be used in 68 Sainsbury’s grocery stores, but the new version allows for checkout-free payment. “Our teams are constantly working hard to bring new convenient shopping experiences to customers, and we’re delighted to be the first grocery retailer in the U.K. to offer customers the ability to shop checkout-free,” said Clodagh Moriarty, chief digital officer for Sainsbury’s. “The latest version of SmartShop, with its new payment feature, will make it super quick for customers to get in and out of the store for those that want to scan, pay and go.”

Customers at the test store scan the QR code by the exit for confirmation that they’ve paid for their items before leaving. Store employees are needed only to remove any security tags on protected products.

This same location also offers self-serve checkouts and cashiers, in addition to allowing customers to pay with the SmartShop app. Sainsbury’s will use the test period to gather feedback from customers in order to make any adjustments before further testing.

Amazon Go recently announced it would be opening another Seattle location, while Albertsons is experimenting with similar scan-and-pay technology.
