Seven-Eleven Japan Halts Draft Beer Promotion

The company was concerned stores would be overrun by seekers of low-cost suds.

TOKYO – Seven-Eleven Japan canceled its scheduled sale of draft beer over concerns that its stores and cashiers might be overrun by thirsty customers in the summer heat, according to The Asahi Shimbun.

Under the original plan, customers would receive dedicated cups that could be filled with Kirin draft beer by pushing a button on the beer-serving machine near the store cash register. The price was to be 100 yen ($0.90), including tax, for a small size beer and 190 yen for a medium size, although quantities of each size were not announced.

The promotion was scheduled to start in stores around Tokyo on July 17, but videos of the chain’s beer-serving machines started spreading rapidly on social media around July 13, and the company’s headquarters was inundated with inquiries about which stores would be participating. In response, the company nixed the beer fest.

“We judged that we would be unable to establish an adequate setup at the outlets,” Seven-Eleven Japan said in a statement.
