NEW YORK – Today isn’t just any Thursday. It’s free Slurpee
Thursday, CNBC reports. In celebration of 7-Eleven’s unofficial birthday — July
11 — the convenience store chain is giving away 12-ounce Slurpees today, a
super-sizing from its previous 7.11-ounce birthday giveaways.
According to 7-Eleven’s Laura Gordon, vice president of
marketing and brand innovation, the chain will give away 7 million Slurpees
today at a retail value of $7.6 million. Why? "It helps us reconnect with
people who love the Slurpee," she said.
This year’s larger freebie is a nod towards previous
customer feedback. "Moms asked us
for cups with lids," Gordon said, and unlike the 7.11-ounce cups, the
conventional, 12-ounce Slurpee comes with a lid. "That means less mess in
the car."
7-Eleven has been promoting its free Slurpee day since March
11 via Facebook and Instagram. It has also begun selling Slurpee-branded
merchandise at many locations.
