CANTON, Mass. – Just in time for National Donut Day on Friday, Dunkin’ Donuts will launch its Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich nationally, Nation’s Restaurant News reports. The fried egg and smoked bacon sandwich uses a split yeast donut ring as its bread. The donut chain started testing the item in April in eastern Massachusetts.

The Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich will hit stores quicker than usual “because we are using ingredients that are currently on our menu,” said Stan Frankenthaler, executive chef and vice president of global product innovation for the chain.

Dunkin’ Donuts will allow patrons to customize the new sandwich, such as having it served on a bagel or with different meats, such as ham and turkey. Frankenthaler said they “tried the sandwich with all of our meats, including bacon, ham and turkey, and besides bacon I think the next best meat to use in the sandwich is ham. It’s a little more filling, but the saltiness of the ham pairs really well with the sweetness of the glazed donut.”

In celebration of National Donut Day on June 7, Dunkin’ Donuts will give away a free donut with every beverage purchase as long as supplies last. Kangaroo Express will also celebrate National Donut Day with a free donut to customers at each of its 300 bakery-ready locations.
