Santa Fe wants retailers to allow non-customers to use the bathroom as part of its Happy Toilet campaign.

SANTA FE, N.M. – Will Happy Toilet translate into happy customer? That’s what the Chuck Higgins of Santa Fe hopes will happen as more retailers start to allow members of the public to use their bathroom, not just customers, The New Mexican reports. Higgins, who owned a retail shop, came up with the idea of having businesses volunteer to put a sticker on their window or door indicating anyone could use the store’s restroom.

Higgins floated the idea to the city’s Chamber of Commerce to see if some funds from Tourism Santa Fe could be funneled to participating retailers to help with extra supplies and maintenance of the restrooms. The idea came from Germany’s Nette Toilette (which translates to “Nice Toilet”) initiative that has spread to 200 member cities in Germany and Switzerland.

Chamber of Commerce director Simon Brackley and Randy Randall, director of Tourism Santa Fe, have been discussing the idea. Higgins has “a really good idea,” that could be an “interim solution” to the lack of public facilities in the downtown area, Randall said. An initial test might run for six months starting in April funded by private donations to cover stickers, maps and participators compensation.

Larry Keller, owner of Design Warehouse, said the Happy Toilet is “wonderful idea,” adding that he never forbids a request to use his bathroom. “People need a restroom, especially visitors who don’t have houses a few blocks or a few miles away. And we won’t have people buying things if their bladder hurts them,” he said.
