SAN FRANCISCO – Amazon Prime members in four cities can now order many of the items stocked at their local Whole Foods for free, two-hour delivery, USA Today reports. Prime customers in Austin, Texas; Cincinnati; Dallas; and Virginia Beach, Va., can receive meat, seafood, fresh produce and flowers delivered, among other items. “We might not have every last item that could be available in your local store but we’re going to have the vast majority of them,” said Stephanie Landry, vice president of Prime Now, Amazon Fresh and Amazon Restaurants.

Prime members who reside in those areas can check via the Prime Now app or Amazon website to see if Whole Foods delivery is available in their ZIP code. The same-day groceries delivery is what Charlie O’Shea, Moody’s lead retail analyst, deems the “unlocking” of the Whole Foods purchase. “In acquiring Whole Foods, Amazon gained a sorely-needed brick-and-mortar partner with which to scale its food business and, provided the limited effort announced today is successful, we expect the entire Whole Foods network to ramp up for delivery in due course as well,” he said.

Amazon immediately started leveraging Whole Foods brand by lowering prices on items at U.S. store and selling Whole Food’s 365 Everyday Value brands online. The two-hour delivery test will be fulfilled by pickers, who will grab the order from a Whole Foods store. “They will pick the items, put them in appropriate packaging to maintain the chill chain and pack them,” Landry said.

After the order is packed, Amazon Flex drivers, who contract with Amazon to deliver via their own vehicles but with the online retailer’s routing app, will complete the delivery. Whole Foods delivery will be available during the local store’s opening hours. Amazon has already indicated it would be bringing the service to other areas soon.
