BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Target Corp. now offers same-day delivery at 57 stores in Birmingham and South Florida, Chain Store Age reports. The discount retailer started the service today via Shipt, which it acquired in December for $550 million.

Target announced it would increase the stores offering same-day delivery to close to half by February 12, the end of its first quarter. Most of its stores will have the service in place by this holiday season.

“Our teams moved at lightning speed to get Target up and running on Shipt’s platform in less than eight weeks,” said Target COO John Mulligan. “And we’re not stopping there—we’ll keep expanding….making Target the first retailer to be able to offer same-day delivery in all major markets across the country.”

A membership-based service similar to Amazon Prime, Shipt has a yearly fee of $99. Shipt members shop its online marketplace to view participating retailer “shelves” available for delivery in their area. Target is initially offering same-day delivery on groceries, home, electronics and essentials, among other goods. By the end of next year, all major product categories at Target will be available to Shipt members.

Rival Walmart is also exploring delivery options, including free curbside pickup for groceries and store-to-fridge delivery via a partnership with August Home. Amazon has also focused on delivery with its Instant Pickup, Amazon Key with in-home delivery and joint venture with Olo and Amazon Restaurant.
