Burger King’s Hefty New Burger

The Double Quarter Pound King Sandwich is the latest entry into the fast-food burger wars.

MIAMI – Burger King has gone bigger than it’s ever gone before with its new Double Quarter Pound King Sandwich, which is exactly what it sounds like—a half pound of beef with two slices of American cheese tucked inside a toasted sesame seed bun. USA Today reports the new menu item is a direct swipe at McDonald’s Double Quarter Pounder.

The new King burger is poised to drive profits, especially at a $5.39 price point. “We’d like to offer our deepest condolences to all the flat-top fried double quarter pound burgers out there. We’re flame grilling the competition,” Burger King said in a statement.

This isn’t the first time Burger King has gone after McDonald’s. While Burger King’s sales jumped 3.6% in its third-quarter earnings report, McDonald’s has been regaining ground with its Signature Crafted Recipes sandwiches, McCafe hand-crafted drinks and its new $1-$2-$3 Dollar Menu.

But these fast-food burger chains have stiff competition from fast-casual burger restaurants, such as Smashburger, Shake Shack, Five Guys and Fatburger. “Menu initiatives that add newness help drive some traffic. It’s the one thing quick-service restaurants have to do to attract customers,” said Helena Song, who covers Restaurant Brands International for S&P Global. “This particular initiative is aimed at attracting those hard-core burger eaters.”
