Vote on Keystone Scheduled for Today

House of Representatives plans to vote on controversial pipeline bill, despite veto threat from President Obama.

January 09, 2015

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives is planning to vote today on legislation approving the Keystone XL pipeline, despite the White House’s announcement this week that President Obama will veto any Keystone legislation that comes across his desk. However, with Republicans holding a strong majority of seats, the measure is sure to pass the House.

This vote will be the tenth time since 2011 that the GOP-controlled chamber has passed measures approving the oil-sands pipeline, which has been under review by the Obama administration for more than six years. The most recent vote was in November, when the House passed it 252-161. The Senate, now also controlled by Republicans, is expected to begin floor discussion on a similar bill early next week.

The pipeline, which would deliver up to 830,000 barrels of oil a day from Canada to the Gulf Coast, has faced delays and has become a political flash point in the debate over climate change and economic growth.
