The convenience store industry is constantly changing and evolving to keep up with consumer demand. Being aware of present and future trends is important to continue growing as a retailer. In this webinar, industry thought leaders from PDI Technologies reflected on the biggest trends from 2023 as well as looked into the future for budding trends in 2024.
This year, Jeff Hassman, vice president of product strategy and partnerships at PDI Technologies said that the biggest trend he noticed was innovation with technology. “We saw a lot of retailers figuring out how to do order ahead and delivery and really mature those systems—new point of sales systems, new modern checkout systems food ordering kiosks and more.”
Hassman continued to say that investments in technology are likely to continue in 2024, especially in infrastructure. The investments are looking to “make it easier for retailers to be able to test new innovations, be able to get them out quickly and decide whether its working for them or not [without] having to have a big IT project.”

The speakers also predicted that the market is likely going to shift back toward being an employer’s market and that overall basket size is going to increase in 2024. Hassman stated that he believes the industry is going to see a recovery in fundamentals, with trips returning and various items coming back as well.
Another trend expected to continue in 2024 is the investment in loyalty programs and social media. Additionally, retailers are going to be looking into how they can make the store experience more personable and how they are going to be able to do that with technology. The beginning of that process has already begun with personalized pricing.
