Partnership for a Healthier America

For the past decade, NACS has been engaged with the Partnership for a Healthier America. PHA works with organizations across the supply chain—food producers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers—to improve the nutritional profile of foods and beverages and create positive change in the U.S. food landscape.

PHA convenience store partners have more than 2,500 locations across 39 states, 75% of which are located in food-scarce neighborhoods. PHA also reaches over 77,000 convenience stores through its six distributor partnerships (Core-Mark, Esstar, Harold Levinson Associates, Harbor Wholesale Foods, McLane, S. Abraham & sons).

Over the years, NACS members (Aloha Petroleum, Cumberland Farms, Enmarket, Kum & Go, Kwik Trip, Loop, Maverik, Ricker’s, Sheetz, Twice Daily, U-Gas) signed commitments with PHA.

NACS became the first retail association to make a commitment with PHA in 2017, tapping into PHA’s resources and expertise to help convenience stores provide more visibility to healthier and better-for-you choices inside their stores. Two years later, NACS was named PHA’s Partner of the Year.

Making a Healthy Choice Convenient

NACS and PHA have resources to help members grow their healthier and better-for-you offerings in convneience stores:

  • Packaged foods found in convenience stores deliver healthier choices. NACS and PHA developed the Healthier Product Calculator to help retailers create better-for-you product sets.
  • Here are seven tips that retailers can consider when setting goals to attract more customers to their healthier food and beverage options.
  • NACS and PHA engage with small-format stores, specifically corner stores and bodegas, that are often the only food source for residents in highly rural or urban settings. Through in-person meetings, webinars and online idea-sharing, numerous organizations throughout the U.S. work together to discover ways to make healthier items available and attractive to customers in under-served areas.
