NACS | PHA Better-for-You Product Set

Identifying Healthier Options

Half of all Americans (and 62% of those ages 18-34) would buy healthier snacks if those snacks or drinks were identified as healthier by a credible health and nutrition group, according to a NACS consumer survey.

Additional research, including retailer pilot tests, suggests that making healthier options more convenient to customers, whether at the checkout area, in endcaps, in coolers or adjacent to other products, can increase sales of those products.

According to a Hudson Institute report, 75% of convenience store customers are eating healthier than they used to, and 66% of convenience store shoppers looking for healthy foods that can be eaten on-the-go. There is ample opportunity for the convenience retail industry to continue driving healthier snacking opportunities for customers.

About the Healthier Category Guide

The Healthier Category Guide was developed by using the NACS Category Definitions and Numbering Guide. PHA experts analyzed each category and subcategory in the NACS Category Definitions and Numbering Guide and defined products and items that might meet the PHA Healthier Food and Beverage Product Criteria (PDF), which is based on the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and national expert recommendations.

About the Healthier Product Calculator

NACS and PHA created a web-based nutrition resource to help convenience stores identify products as healthier options and assist them in defining their better-for-you sets. This healthier product calculator helps identify packaged foods and beverages that meet the PHA Healthier Food and Beverage Product Criteria (PDF), which is also based on the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and national expert recommendations.
