Using Leadership to Drive Success

Program teaches concepts to engage employees and improve store performance.

ATLANTA – The NACS Leadership for Success program helps convenience store managers and district supervisors build long-term growth skills by giving them a hands-on opportunity to test leadership concepts that improve employee performance and store profitability.

During two 50-minute education sessions at the NACS Show tomorrow, participants from this year’s Leadership for Success program will discuss their use of skills covered in the training.

“People will see how their colleagues are applying leadership concepts in practical ways to get business results,” said Joanne M. Loce, the facilitator of Leadership for Success and moderator of both sessions: “Leadership for Success Part 1 and Part 2.”

“It is energizing for people to see how their peers are taking these concepts and finding innovative ways to use them in a work environment so they can not only get better employee engagement, but also better business results,” she said.

Earlier this year, the 16 program participants spent five days at Carter Hall Conference Center in Millwood, Virginia. During that time, they reflected on their leadership styles, evaluated their core values, learned about different leadership concepts and tools, and engaged in exercises that demonstrated how leadership skills could be applied to everyday work experiences.

The co-facilitators of the program were Lisa Dell’Alba, president and CEO of Square One Markets and a member of the NACS Board of Directors, and Larry Jackson, managing director for GTS Business Resources LLC.

Participants learned how to better engage employees at the store level, motivate them to perform better, recognize individual and group efforts, and manage stress and wellness in the fast-paced c-store environment, Loce explained.

“We also had action learning projects in which participants took what they learned in class and applied it to projects in their work environments,” she said. “They will present the results of what they have been doing. They will review how they have implemented creative practices to recruit and engage employees,
reduce turnover and discuss ways of measuring the impact of the actions they implemented. They will share what they wanted to do as a result of going through the program, what they have done and how they are measuring that success.”
