How Convenient Tech Can Kill

Convenience Matters episode shares spooky stories of how your technology can take you out.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – In this week’s Halloween episode of Convenience Matters, Gray Taylor, executive director of Conexxus, talks about how automated devices and networks need vigilant attention to protect users from data breaches that can end very badly.

Taylor spoke with podcast hosts Donovan Woods and Stephanie Sikorski while recording on location at the NACS Show earlier this month. Home automation technologies that control everything from thermostats to lights in an outdoor treehouse are so readily available at an affordable price that people take network accessibility for granted, Taylor says.

As retailers connect everything from shelf talkers to cooler sensors, retailers must be just as aware of network vulnerabilities. Conexxus will continue to take an active role in how the internet of things evolves within the industry and has many resources available to help retailers set up store networks.

As it pertains to the growing availability of autonomous cars, Woods adds from the consumer perspective, “If I don’t have the ability to take control at some point, how can I trust that my phone or my car won’t have issues someday, especially when my family is with me?” Taylor points out that the automotive industry has been very proactive to promote connectivity, but not open connectivity to help keep both drivers and passengers safe.

Listen to this week’s episode of Convenience Matters to find out how to make sure you have a hack-proof store and home. A new Convenience Matters podcast is released every week focusing on topics related to convenience stores.
